ශ්‍රී ලංකා - ඔස්ට්‍රේලියා එක්දින තරඟාවලිය මේ වනවිට 2-0 ක් ලෙස ඔස්ට්‍රේලියාව ඉදිරියෙන් පසුවන අතර. පැවති තරඟ දෙකේදීම ශ්‍රී ලංකා පිතිකරුවන්ගේ අසාර්ථකත්වය කැපී පෙනෙන්නක් විය. T20 තරඟ දෙක දිල්ශාන්ගේ හා මහේලගේ සුපිරි පිතිකරණය හා දිල්රුවන් හා අජන්තගේ පන්දු යැවීමත් හේතුවෙන් ජය ගැනීමට සමත්වූ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට එක්දින තරඟාවලියේදී වැරදුනේ කොතැනද ?

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට කාලාන්තරයක් තිස්සේ පැවති විශාලම අභියෝගය වූයේ මැද පෙළ පිතිකරුවන්ගේ අසාර්ථකත්වයයි. නමුත් මේ වනවිට දිනේෂ් චන්දිමාල්, දිමුත් කරුණාරත්න, ළහිරු තිරිමාන්න හා භානුක රාජපක්ෂ යන යෞවනයන් දෙස බැලීමේදී එම අර්බුදය විසඳීමේ ලකුණු පහළ වී ඇත. මේ වනවිට එක්දින කණ්ඩායමේ නිත්‍යය ස්ථානයක් ලබා සිටින චන්දිමාල්ව අප නිසි පරිදි භාවිතා කරනවාද ?

අංක තුන පිතිකරුවකු ලෙස කණ්ඩායමට ගෙනා චන්දිමාල්, එංගලන්තය සමඟ පැවති 5 වන තරඟයේ සිට පැමිනෙන්නේ අංක 5 ස්ථානයේ. නමුත් පසුගිය ආසියානු කුසළානයට හා ලෝක කුසලානයට ඔහුව නම් නොකළේත් අංක 5 වැනි ස්ථානයක ඔහු ක්‍රීඩා කිරීමෙන් ඵලක් නැතැයි පවසමින්. සැබැවින්ම චන්දිමාල් පාසල් කණ්ඩායමක හෝ පළමු පෙළ අන්තර් සමාජ හෝ අන්තර් පළාත් කිසිඳු තරඟයක අංක 5 ක්‍රීඩා නොකළ ක්‍රීඩකයෙක්. පාසල් සමයේ ඔහු ආරම්භක පිතිකරුවකු වූ අතර, අන්තර් සමාජ හා පළාත් තරඟ වලදී ඔහු අංක අංක 3 පිතිකරුවෙක්. මේ අනුව අපට පෙනී යන්නේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා කණ්ඩායමේ පිතිකරණ අනුපිළිවෙළෙහි යම් ගැටළුවක් ඇතිබවයි.

ඇයි චන්දිමාල් හට අංක 3 ක්‍රීඩා කිරීමට නොහැකි ? එකම හේතුව ජාතික කණ්ඩායමේ අංක 3-4 හි ක්‍රීඩා කරන්නේ පරිණත ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ ක්‍රීඩකයන්වන සංගක්කාර හා මහේල වීමයි. එසේනම් කණ්ඩායම් කළමණාකාරීත්වයට ගතහැකි ක්‍රියාමාර්ග 3 කි.

1. සංගක්කාර හා මහේල 3-4 ද, චන්දිමාල් 5 ද ක්‍රීඩා කිරීම.
2. චන්දිමාල් කණ්ඩායමට නම් නොකර, අංක 5 ක්‍රීඩා කිරීමට සුදුසු වෙනත් පිතිකරුවකු යොදාගැනීම.
3. සංගක්කාර හා/හෝ මහේල තම ස්ථානය වෙනස්කර චන්දිමාල් අංක 3 ක්‍රීඩා කිරීම.

• විසඳුම 1 :-

මෙහි ප්‍රතිඵල මේ වනවිට අප අත්විඳිමින් සිටී. විශේෂයෙන්ම හම්බන්තොට වැනි දැවැන්ත ක්‍රීඩාංගනයකදී විශාල පහරවල් වලට යාම අසීරු කටයුත්තකි. බොහෝවිට පවර් ප්ලේ අවස්ථාවෙන් පසු 6,4 පහරවල් ලබාගැනීමට වඩා සෑම පන්දුවකටම පන්දුව හිඩැස් වෙත යොමුකොට ලකුණු 1,2 ලබා ගැනීමට ක්‍රීඩකයන් උත්සාහකළ යුතුය. නමුත් පසුගිය තරඟයේ පවර් ප්ලේ වලින් අනතුරුව, විශාල පහර වලට යන ක්‍රීඩකයෙකු වන චන්දිමාල් අංක 5 ට පැමිණීමෙන් පිතිකරණ අනුපිළිවෙලෙහි ඇති දුර්වලතාව නැවත වරක් පසක්විය.


අත්දැකීම් අඩු තරුණ දක්ෂ ක්‍රීඩකයෙකු එක්වරම කෙදිනකවත් ක්‍රීඩා නොකල අංක 5 හි ක්‍රීඩා කිරීමට යොමුකරනවාද ? මාළුවෙකුට ගස් නැඟීමට නොහැකි නිසා තම ජීවත්වීමේ අයිතිය අහිමිකරනවාද ? තවත් කපුගෙදර කෙනෙකු බිහිකරනවාද ? මේ ප්‍රශ්නවලට පිළිතුරු කළමණාකාරීත්වය හා ජ්‍යේෂ්ඨ ක්‍රීඩකයන් සිතිය යුතුය.

• විසඳුම 2 :-

ගැටලුව වන්නේ අංක 5 වෙත අප කැඳවන්නේ කවුරුන්ද යන්නයි. පසුගිය කාලය පුරාවට අසාර්ථකවූ මැදපෙළ වෙත නැවතත් ගමන්කිරීමට ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට සිදුවේ.

• විසඳුම 3 :-

මෙය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට අලුත් දෙයක් නොවේ. අතීතයේ අර්ජුන රණතුංග හා අරවින්ද ද සිල්වා ද මාවන් අතපත්තු, රසල් ආනල්ඩ්, මහේල ජයවර්ධන හා කුමර සංගක්කාර වැනි තරුණයන් වෙනුවෙන් මේ කැපකිරීම කරනලදි. තම ක්‍රීඩා දිවියේ අවසාන සමයේදී එතෙක් අංක 4 ක්‍රීඩාකළ අරවින්දට 5 හිද, එතෙක් අංක 5 ක්‍රීඩාකළ අර්ජුනට 6-7 ස්ථානවලද ක්‍රීඩා කිරීමට තරම් ඔවූහු තම නවක ක්‍රීඩකයන් හට ත්‍යාගශීලී විය.

මින් මා තෝරාගන්නේ තෙවන විසඳුමයි. සංගක්කාර හා මහේල වැනි පරිණත දෙපලකට මේ වෙනස දරාගත හැකිවිය යුතුය. හිටපු දකුණු අප්‍රිකානු හා පාකිස්තානු ජාතික පුහුණුකරුවකු වූ බොබ් වූල්මර් වරක් පැවසූ පරිදි හොඳම පිතිකරුවා එක්දින කණ්ඩායමක අංක 5හි ක්‍රීඩාකළ යුතුය. මගේ මතය අනුව නම් මේ මහේල ජයවර්ධනහට සුදුසුම ස්ථානය බවයි. අප අවිවාදයෙන්ම පිළිගතයුතු කරුණක් වන්නේ දඟ පන්දු යවන්නන්ට මුහුණ දීමේදී හා ලකුණු 1,2 රැස්කිරීමේදී වර්තමාන ශ්‍රී ලංකා කණ්ඩායමේ සිටින හොඳම පිතිකරුවා ඔහු බවයි. අවශ්‍යය නම් මේ ස්ථානයෙහි සංගක්කාර ක්‍රීඩා කිරීම ද එතරම් ගැටළුවක් නැත.

චන්දිමාල් යනු සංගක්කාර හා මහේල ගෙන් පසු ශ්‍රී ලංකාව සොයාගත් දීප්තිමත්ම පිතිකරුවායි. මෙවැනි තරුණ ක්‍රීඩකයන්ව කළමණාකාරීත්වය පරිස්සමින් මෙහෙයවිය යුතුයි. සංගක්කාර හා මහේල වැනි ජ්‍යේෂ්ඨ පිතිකරුවන්ද මෙයට වඩා වගකීමකින් නවකයන් ආරක්ෂාකිරීමට පියවර ගතයුතුයි. ඇතැම්විට තරුණයෙකුට අවස්ථාවදීම සඳහා පිතිකරන ලැයිස්තුවේ පහළට යාමෙන් ඔවුනට ලබාගත හැකි ශතක ප්‍රමාණයේ අඩුවක් විය හැකියි. එබැවින් IPL තරඟාවලිහිදී ඔවුන්ට ලැබෙන මුදල් අගයද අඩුවිය හැකිය. නමුත් රට ගැන සිතනවානම් ඔවුන්ට මෙය සිදුකළ හැකි විය යුතුයි. මෙය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ක්‍රිකට් සංස්කෘතියයි. අතීතයේද ජ්‍යේෂ්ඨයන් තම නවකයන් වෙනුවෙන් අවශ්‍යය විට මේ යුතුකම ඉටුකළහ.

What went wrong for Sri Lanka ?

After two comprehensive victories in the T20s, Sri Lanka are struggling to win a game in the ODI series against Australia. Sri Lanka won the T20 series with splendid performances from skipper T.M. Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardena, Dilruwan Perera & mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis. But what went wrong for Sri Lanka in the ODI series ? 

 

Since the retirements of great batsmen like Arjuna & Aravinda, Sri Lanka did not had a good solid middle order. But we can assume that problem will gets solve in near future with very talented young prospects like of Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunarathna, Lahiru Thirimanne & Bhanuka Rajapakse. Chandimal already has got a permenent place in the side. But do Sri Lanka use his talent the way it should be ? 

 

Chandimal came in to the side as a number 3 batsman. But since the 5 th ODI against England he had to bat at number 5. Surprisingly team management did not wantted to have him in the side for Asia Cup or World Cup stating that he should bat at number 3 or 4 & there is no use of him at 5. Frankly Chandimal has never played at 5 in school level, club level or inter provincial level. At school time he was an opening batsman & now he is battin at 3 in club level & inter provincial level. So we can see there is some problem in the Sri Lanka's batting order. 

 

Why Chandimal cannot bat at number 3 ? Answer is simple. We have got two of the best batsmen in the world at 3 & 4. So there are 3 choices for the team management. 

 

 

1. Sangakkara & Mahela batting at 3-4 and Chandimal at 5. 
2. Dropping Chandimal & bring in another suitable batsman at 5. 
3. Sangakkara and/or Mahela changing their batting possition/s and Chandimal at 3 

 

 

 

• Solution 1 :- 

 

At the moment we are experiencing the results of this. Specially in a huge ground like Hambantota you got to milk the bowling more than playing big shots. But what we have seen in the last match was a big shots player - Chandimal coming to bat at 5 after the power play overs. 

 

What are we doing ? An inexperienced talented youngster throwing to a position where he has never played before at any level ? Remember what happened to talented Kapugedera. Team management & senior players should pay attention to this problem ! 

 

 

• Solution 2 :- 

 

Then the problem is who is that number 5 batsman ? Are we go back to that failed middle order ? 

 

 

• Solution 3 :- 

 

This is not a new thing for Sri Lanka. In the past senior players like Arjuna Ranatuna & Aravinda de Silva did this sacrifice for their juniors like Marvan Atapattu, Russell Arnold, Mahela Jayawardena & Kumar Sangakkara. At the end of their careers Aravinda had to bat at 5 who batted at 4 before & Arjuna had to bat at 6-7 who batted at 5 before. Those greats were so generous to their juniors & team. 

 

I would chose Solution 3. It should not be that difficult to adapt for that role to great batsmen like Sangakkara and Mahela. Once the late South African and Pakistani coach said your best batsman should bat at 5 in ODIs. In my mind Mahela Jayawardena is the perfect man for that role. Without doubt he is the Sri Lanka's best batsman against spin. Also he has that natural talent to improvise and milk the bowling. Also if he wanted, it will not make much difference by Sangakkara at 5. 

 

Chandimal is a rare talent. Probably the best young batsman we had after Sangakkara and Mahela. Management should handle cautiously young players like him. Also senior players like Sangakkara and Mahela should protect these youngsters. At the moment these twos are the fathers of Sri Lankan team. Maybe they will not get much opportunities to score more centuries if they gave up their batting positions. Therefor they will not make the amount of money they used to make from the IPL. But they have to do this for their country. This is Sri Lanka's cricket culture. In the past, our seniors did that for their juniors when needed. 

Shakib questions India's Test status !

The 2nd test of India vs England at Trent Bridge ended with a humiliating 319 runs defeat for India. Apart from Rahul Dravid most of the Indian batsmen were not up to their standards.

In the meantime, Bangladeshi captain Shakib Al Hasan have expressed his thoughts on India's poor performance at the post match (Zim vs Bang 3 day game) media conference.

" I don't think India is good side to have Test status. Look at their last 7 innings. Only once they have able to past 300 mark. If we consider last 5 innings, none ! But our boys have able to past 300 mark 3 times out of last 7 innings. That includes 419 at Dhaka & 382 at Lords against English bowlers. Haven't we made it large ? Alas ! Whole world saying ICC should revoke Test status of Bangladesh. But I don't know why they can't see India."

Speaking further, he added on current Indian openers;
" Actually, their openers aren't test stranded. I think you can remember 2 run a ball centuries of Tamim bhai's at Lords & at Old Trafford. And other opener Imrul Kayes also played well. Alas ! Whole world saying ICC should revoke Test status of Bangladesh. But I don't know why they can't see India."

He stated furthermore as return of Virender Shewag will not going to change many things. Statistically there is possibility of that. The star opening batsman averages just 39.5 in England compared to his career average of 53.43. Not only that, he is yet to play a test at Edgbaston & averages only 12 at The Oval, which are the venues for next 2 tests. However Bangladeshi dashing opener Tamim Iqbal has able to average 67 in England.

Apart from India's mistakes in the game, he uttered on "Spirit of the Game" as an answer to a journalist's questions.
" If I was in that situation I would have go to the English dressing room with Stuart Law on day 4 morning & request declaration or a draw for the sake of "Spirit of the game". Alas ! Whole world saying ICC should revoke Test status of Bangladesh. But I don't know why they can't see India."

Finally he added his views on Bangladesh lost against Zimbabwe,
"Well, everyone knows we are slow starters. It is just a practice match for the Test. I hope we can bounce back with Tamim bhai returning to the side."
